Fundamentals of Fractured Reservoir Engineering (Developments in Petroleum Science) (Hardcover)

The history of fractured reservoirs is probably as long as the history of petroleum itself. During the Los Angeles Panel Discussion on Fractured Reservoirs (March 1952) Levorsen mentioned that the notion “fractured porosity” was introduced only two years after Drake’s discovery in 186 l by the geologist E.B. Andrews who wrote that if fractures are numerous along the anticline axis it represents the primary cause of an accumulation, and also that a law of proportionality was observed between the oil produced and the amount of fissures. But it was only in the early nineteen fifties, with the important discoveries in the Spraberry trend of West Texas and giant fields in the Middle East that an increasing interest for this type of fields started. In continuation in the late fifties, but especially in the last two decades, various concepts have been developed in various areas such as geology, reservoir description, flow toward the well, reservoir mechanisms, etc. But the studies and papers published in the literature presented single problems in a limited area and unrelated to a global concept of fractured reservoirs. Therefore, in order to integrate the existent published material and my personal views on natural fractured reservoirs, I have tried to write a self-contained book where the reader can find the necessary tools for the evaluation of fractures by processing the observed data, examining the flow behaviour towards a well and analysing reservoir behaviour during a field’s entire history, through its specific production mechanisms.

Enjoy this great book!

3-D Structural Geology: A Practical Guide to Quantitative Surface and Subsurface Map Interpretation

By Richard H. Groshong Jr.

Download... (11.76 MB)

* Publisher: Springer
* Number Of Pages: 400
* Publication Date: 2008-07-01
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: 3540310541
* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9783540310549

Product Description:

This is a handbook of practical techniques for making the best possible interpretation of geological structures at the map scale and for extracting the maximum amount of information from surface and subsurface maps. The 3-D structure is defined by internally consistent structure contour maps and cross sections of all horizons and faults. The book is directed toward the professional user who is concerned about both the accuracy of an interpretation and the speed with which it can be obtained from incomplete data. Quantitative methods are emphasized throughout, and numerous analytical solutions are given that can be easily implemented with a pocket calculator or a spreadsheet. Interpretation strategies are defined for GIS or CAD users, yet are simple enough to be done by hand. The user of this book will be able to produce better geological maps and cross sections, judge the quality of existing maps, and locate and fix mapping errors.

The second edition has been reorganized to more nearly follow the typical interpretation workflow. A significant amount of new material has been added, in particular numerous examples of 3-D models and techniques for using kinematic models to predict fault and ramp-anticline geometry. The new edition includes a CD which supplements the text in several ways. Text figures are reproduced in color and complete Tecplot models are provided for a number of representative figures. For those interested in working exercises in mapping software, xyz input files are provided in text format for many of the map-based exercises. Answers to selected exercises are included.

This is probably the best available text on three-dimensional representation of geological structures. It is a handbook for use by professionals but would also serve as a supplemental text for structural geology or workstation courses.
The content is logically organized, well focused, clearly written and complete. The topics begin with the basics. These include classification, description and analysis of structures. More advanced topics follow. They range from dynamic interaction between structural and sedimentary events to fluid movements and to restoration. The worked examples are simple and clearly make their respective points. The exercises range from rudimentary to somewhat challenging for the first-time student of structural geology. Many topics would be new to anyone who has not kept current with advances in structural geology. These include, among others, new techniques in dip sequence analysis and calculating area-depth relations.

Modern technology in the form of workstations permits geoscientists to produce spectacular graphics depicting geological structures and their development. A common complaint of energy company managers is that the interpretive graphics look so good that they are believable simply because of the presentation. When financial decisions such as drilling are made based on those interpretations they often are found to be incorrect. Workstation interpreters could significantly improve the quality of their structural interpretations if they master the content of Dr. Groshong's book. Moreover, as visualization becomes an important trend to the future of interpretation technology, the basic science represented by this book takes on a more important and timely meaning.

The price of the book may seem to be excessive. This is especially evident when compared with texts prepared by non-profit organizations such as the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Those books are more attractive because they use color and are printed on better quality paper. This book has no color and is printed on ordinary quality paper. However, if the price of the book is compared with similar books published by for-profit book houses, the price is competitive. In the final analysis, the content of the text and quality of the writing more than justify its purchase.

I recommend this text to all interested in the study and practice of structural geology, especially interpreters using workstation or visualization technology.

Product Description:

Hardbound. Carbonate diagenesis is a subject of enormous complexity because of the basic chemical reactivity of carbonate minerals. These carbonate minerals react quickly with natural waters that either dissolve the carbonates, or precipitate new carbonates to bring the water into equilibrium with the host carbonate sediments and rocks. These rock-water interactions either create porosity by dissolution, or destroy porosity by the precipitation of carbonate cements into pore spaces. Carbonate Diagenesis and Porosity examines these important relationships in detail.
This volume is published in co-operation with OGCI, and is based on training courses organised by OGCI and taught by Dr. Moore. It is intended to give the working geologist and university graduate student a reasonable overview of carbonate diagenesis and its influence on the evolution of carbonate porosity. It starts with a discussion of the major differences between carbonates and silic

Review

...a very useful introduction to the topic of carbonate diagenesis for students (at the post-graduate level) and to oil industry geologists. -- Marine Geology, 1992
1990 This book combines solid research, scientific reporting, and relevance - all based on the work, experience, lecturing to students, and courses presented to industry by the author.
It is useful not only to the graduate student attending classes in carbonate rocks and to the carbonate specialist, but also to non-specialists dealing with carbonates, either for geological or engineering reasons. The well-organized text, abundant line drawings and limited number of photomicrographs result in a book easier to follow than many well-illustrated texts that confuse the non-specialist.

1992 ...a very useful introduction to the topic of carbonate diagenesis for students (at the post-graduate level) and to oil industry geologists. -- Marine Geology
1992 The work is lucidly presented in a style making it a pleasure to read, and its extensive bibliography ensures that it will be an important source book for the student who wishes to research specialised aspects of the subject. -- G.R. Orme, Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering

Dr. Moore has assembled a reference text on carbonate diagenesis, with emphasis on porosity evolution, that is an excellent summary of and addition to an already vast literature on this subject. His book promises to be widely referenced and almost certainly will quickly become a bible in its own right. -- Carbonates&Evaporites
For the past five to ten years, geologists seeking a general description of diagenesis of carbonate rocks have found a void in the literature...The book (Carbonate Diagenesis and Porosity) by Clyde H. Moore may finally have filled the void. The focus of the book is on diagenesis as it relates to modification of carbonate porosity, but the presentation provides an excellent description of carbonate diagenesis in general. The book does contain over 440 references for the individual interested in further background or specifics on any of the topics covered in the book. Also included is a comprehensive index that should be a great aid to those using it as a reference work. The book is well edited and well produced. A major plus to the book is the clear, concise writing style. (Carbonate Porosity and Diagenesis) is an excellent addition to the literature on carbonate diagenesis. It is the only book available to provide comprehensive, up-to-date coverage of carbonate diagenesis and should become the new "standard reference" for the topic. -- D. Joe Benson, University of Alabama, USA, AAPG Bulletin, November 1990

* Publication Date: 2006-02-28
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1402039719
* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781402039713

Product Description:

This is the first book that attempts to broadly integrate the most recent knowledge in the fields of hydrate nucleation and growth in permafrost regions and marine sediments. Gas hydrate reactant supply, growth models, and implications for pore fill by natural gas hydrate are discussed for both seawater precursors in marine sediments and for permafrost hydrate. These models for forming hydrate concentrations that will constitute targets for exploration are discussed, along with exploration methods. Thermodynamic models for the controlled conversion of hydrate to natural gas, which can be recovered using conventional industry practices, suggest that a number of different types of hydrate occurrence are likely to be practical sources of hydrate natural gas. Current progress in the various aspects of commercial development of hydrate gas deposits are discussed, along with the principal extractive issues that have yet to be resolved.

Reflection Seismic Methode (Metode Seismik Refleksi)

Product Description:

This volume illustrates the expanding knowledge of evaporites as important reservoir seals, fluid aquitards, ore-hosting sediments, and economically viable sediments in their own right. Researchers, oil and gas professionals, minerals resource professionals, environmental specialists and others within geology and the other earth sciences shall utilize the information within this book in their understanding of the many recent discoveries and concepts involved in the field of evaporite sedimentology.

Review:

"Evaporites, Petroleum and Mineral Resources" is a good book for information on sedimentologic and petrographic aspects of evaporites, and I recommend it to anyone working with evaporite sediments... "Depositional Environments of Non-Marine Evaporites" are covered by Joseph Smoot and Tim Lowenstein in chapter 3. This is an extensive compilation of material not covered in any of the other books on evaporites and a topic difficult to find in the literature. There are numerous examples of modern and ancient non-marine evaporites and summary tables of occurrences. The extensive reference list compiled for this chapter is also a plus, and a necessity for anyone working on non-marine evaporites. -- R.J. Spencer, Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, 1992

... I recommend this book; some chapters are essential reading or reference sources for those interpreting evaporites, and others form useful introductions to their topics. -- A.C. Kendall, Journal of Sedimentary Petrology
... a valuable overview of a relatively new specialization which, with the extensive case studies and the substantial reference lists, together provide a starting point for local research programmes. -- Australian Mineral Foundation Journal; ERISTAT
...a timely book that does the editor and the authors credit and should not be missed by libraries of institutions, ore and oil companies and by some specialist readers. -- Geologie en Mijnbouw, 1993
